

Ethel “Sis” Irene Taylor, 81, of Abilene, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on October 26, 1942, in Lamesa, Texas, to Felmore and Ruby Brooks, Ethel grew up in a close-knit family, where her laughter and kindness were a constant source of warmth and joy.
Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Ike “Bill” Taylor; her cherished daughter, Frances Carlene Mason; daughter-in-law, Sarah Taylor; her parents, Felmore and Ruby Brooks; her brothers, Jessie Brooks and F.A. Brooks; and her sister, Alma King. She faced these losses with the same grace and strength that she brought to every aspect of her life, finding comfort in her faith and the love of her family.
A woman of deep compassion and boundless humor, Ethel was known for her infectious laughter and quick wit. She had a special gift for making those around her feel loved and valued, whether through her playful jokes or her warm, kind-hearted spirit. Her home was always open, and she delighted in gathering friends and family for good food, good conversation, and most importantly, good company.
Ethel’s legacy of love lives on through her surviving family members, including her daughter Melissa Odis and husband James; her son Johnny Taylor; one son-in-law, Willie Mason of Abilene; grandchildren Amber Stine and Angelica Patheal; great-grandchildren, Joshua Parker, Acura Parker, Sarah Marie Ryan, Jaime Lee Ryan, Christopher Matthew Ryan, Jr.; one sister, Jewel Newman of Cross Plains; and a slew of nieces and nephews. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, wonderful aunt, and a loyal friend, always ready with a smile and a kind word.
Though she will be deeply missed, Ethel’s memory will continue to bring joy to those who knew her. Her laughter will echo in the hearts of her loved ones, a reminder of the bright, beautiful soul who touched so many lives.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 30, from 6:00-8:00 PM and a celebration of Ethel’s life will be held on Saturday, August 31, at 10:00 AM, both at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene, Texas 79606, where family and friends will gather to honor the life of a woman whose love and laughter left a mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
