Jane Ammons Harvey, 80, went to be with her Lord on December 12, 2018. Jane was loved and will be missed by all those who were blessed to know her. She was a long time resident of Abilene, Texas. She was born November 1, 1938 in Sweetwater, Texas to the late Johnnie Marvin and Ethel Eunice Edwards Ammons. She spent her childhood years in Roby, Texas then moved to Abilene to attend McMurry College in 1957. She met the love of her life and her partner in life, James Wiley Harvey at a rodeo in Roby, Texas. They were married August 27, 1960 and made their home in Abilene, Texas. They were soon blessed with two children, Wiley Case Harvey and Cameo Suzanne Harvey.
Jane was a 1961 graduate of McMurry College. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Business with a minor in English. Later in life she received her master's degree in Business Psychology from Abilene Christian University. McMurry was always close to her heart however. She had been Assistant Registrar at McMurry from 1972-1974 before her health forced her to leave the position. Jane and James helped put both of their children through McMurry College and faithfully attended Homecoming each year. Jane received the Cross and Flame Award in 2005 for Outstanding Service to McMurry University and Leadership in the United Methodist Church.
Jane was a member of the sorority T.I.P. while at McMurry and had been the T.I.P. Alumni Association president for many years. During her tenure as Alumni president she helped form the T.I.P. Scholarship in 2012 which helps young women fund their education at McMurry. She also was the editor of the T.I.P. yearly newsletter for the last 16 years.
When she graduated from McMurry she started teaching English in New Home, Texas for about 3 years. She also taught English in Roby, Texas for a short period of time. She was such an excellent teacher that when she was substituting in South Oak Cliff for a semester she was able to teach a Latin class without ever having learned Latin. The Latin teacher said the kids were further ahead in the book than they had ever been in years past and the teacher was shocked when she found out Mrs. Harvey didn't know Latin.
Jane spent 20 years working at the Abilene State School (State Supported Living Center now) from 1983-2003. She had worked her way up to Unit Supervisor and was greatly respected for her management skills. She still met regularly with several people who worked with her during those years. She had a compassionate heart so this was a perfect profession for her.
Once she had retired she began looking for an organization that matched with her compassionate heart. She found that organization in Breakfast on Beech Street (BOBS). She was a faithful supporter of BOBS with her time and her finances for almost 20 years. BOBS provides a warm breakfast and a sack lunch to the homeless and working poor every weekday morning. Jane was on one and sometimes two teams that woke up early on her team's day and helped prepare and serve food to those most in need in Abilene.
Jane was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Abilene for over 15 years and spent many years working on fundraisers to help the children of our community through the love of Kiwanis. This was another wonderful organization that she could belong to so she could help those in need.
Jane was a long time member of First United Methodist Church in Abilene. She attended FUMC in her college years and joined the church with her family in 1972. Throughout the years she has served on many committees and has been a faithful supporter of FUMC.
Jane had many hobbies which included reading, travel, making soaps and lotions, and Facebooking with friends.
Mrs. Harvey was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, James Harvey of the home; two sisters and brothers-in law, Judy Ann and Ed Seeley of Springtown, Texas, and Jonasue and Reggie Phillips of Crowley, Texas; her son, Case Harvey; her daughter and son-in-law, Cameo Harvey and Baker Bryant; grand-daughter, Samantha Harvey; grand-sons, Sterling and Keaton Bryant, all of Abilene, Texas; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church at 202 Butternut Street from 6-7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 14th in the Wesley Room. Service will also be at First United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 15th at 3 p.m. with Gilbert Bela officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Breakfast on Beech Street or to T.I.P. Scholarship Fund at McMurry University
