

Services celebrating her life will be held on Monday, June 12, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home on 277 S. in Abilene. Interment will follow in Trent Garden of Memories. The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday from 3-5 PM also at the funeral home.
Janice was born on April 7, 1943 in Merkel, TX to the late George Davis Byrom and Leta Faye (Payne) Byrom. She grew up around Taylor County and created many memories with her three siblings. She graduated from Trent High School in 1961 at the top of her class. Immediately after high school she began her career with the Taylor County Clerk’s office. She met and fell in love with a young airman, Kenneth Fowler Lyons in Sweetwater and they married April 15, 1967. Janice was elected Taylor County Clerk in 1978 and retired after 44 years of public service. During her tenure as Taylor County Clerk, she was a mentor and made many lifelong friends. She was a member of the Kiwanis Club; she served on the Board of Directors for the County & District Clerks Association of Texas and eventually became President and County Clerk of the Year. Janice and her family were longtime members of Wylie Baptist Church.
Janice was a devoted wife and mother to her two beautiful daughters. Life only got better when she became a, “MeeMee”. She loved spending time and creating memories with her family. Her grandchildren were her world and she took every opportunity to go spend time with them. Janice will be remembered for her compassion, kind hearted nature, love and strong will.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bobby and Leslie Byrom, brother-in-law, Marvin Hewitt and nephew, Jason Hewitt.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Kenneth Lyons; her daughters, Kelly Lyons, Stacy Cortesano and her husband, Derek; grandchildren, Susie, Bella, Luca, and Olivia Cortesano; her sister, Joy Hewitt; sister-in-law, Carla Miers and husband Bruce; niece and nephew, Mandy Galvan and Mark Miers; and a host of extended family and special friends.
