LaVern was born on March 22, 1932, in Abilene, Texas. She was the last of a large family born to the late James Hughie Claxton and Annie Mae (Stevens) Claxton. She and her siblings grew up in a loving Christian home and maintained special bonds of care and concern throughout life. She married the love of her life Billy James Mooty on November 27, 1948, and they spent their entire married life in Abilene where he served as a firefighter. She worked for TIMEX for six years and went on to retire from the City of Abilene as a Print Shop Clerk.
Her faith and walk with the Lord was the most important thing in her life. She loved reading her Bible and living it out. She began her Christian walk in her family’s church, then known as Corinth Baptist Church; now Faith Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. Later on, she became a charter member of Harvest Baptist Church and eventually joined Pioneer Drive. She loved her family dearly as well as most people she met. She enjoyed special times gathered with her family creating memories that will live on for generations.
She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband Bill Mooty; son Michael James Mooty, I; grandson Billy James Mooty, II; brothers Lonnie, J. Elby, Erby, Odell, and Charles Claxton; sisters Juanita Sartor, Lerline Duncan, Frances Varnadore, Dulcy St. Pierre, and Ruth Maxwell.
