

Martha Jane Lacewell, 89, of Abilene passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 in Canyon. A graveside service will be held at 10:00AM Monday, December 4, 2017 in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery with a memorial service following at 11:00AM in the First Baptist Church Chapel. The family will receive friends for a visitation Sunday evening from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home,
5701 Hwy 277 South. Martha was born on September 26, 1928 in Abilene to Walter Nollner and Lucille Massie. She attended Abilene High School and graduated in 1946. She then attended Hardin
Simmons University and graduated from there in 1950. In the same year, Martha also married Robert Lacewell on March 2nd in Borger, Texas. In 1969, she received her Master’s degree from West Texas
State. Martha taught public school for 29 years in Benjamin TX, Hereford, TX and Taos, NM. She spent the last 23 years of her teaching career in Borger. While living in Borger, Martha was active in the youth
department at Buena Vista Baptist Church for 23 yearswhere her husband served as a pastor. Robert and Martha returned to Abilene in 1990 and became active members of First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Priscilla Sunday School class and taught for several years. Martha was active at Hardin Simmons University as well. She participated in the EX-Student Association and she and Robert received the John J. Keeter Alumni Service Award in 2003. Martha also served as music foundation secretary for 5 years and as a chaplain for the alumni association.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2008; two sons, Michael Lacewell on May 10, 1991 and Dr. William Lacewell on July 16, 1991; and her brother, Derward Nollner in 1992.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Virginia Nollner of Dallas; sister-in-law, Gladys Day of Midland, sister-in-law, Mary Lacewell of Allen; nieces, Nancy Nollner Withrow of Dallas, Ann Nollner Strawn of Dallas, Dian Gerber and husband Gary of Canyon, Myra Oden and husband Tim of Edgewood, New Mexico, Tena Waggoner and husband Danny of Midland; nephew, Blake Lacewell and wife Regina of Dumas; special family members, Glennis Frost, Anna Karen Frost and Camiele Asmus and husband Harry.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Michael Lacewell Music Scholarship Fund or the William Robert Lacewell Science Scholarship Fund, or a charity of your choice.
