Mary S. Tovar, 90, of Abilene passed away on Saturday February 24, 2018. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at St. Francis Catholic Church with burial following in Texas State Veterans Cemetery. Visitation and Rosary will be held from 6 to 8pm on Tuesday evening at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. Mary was born on July 4, 1927 in Ballinger, Texas to Juan and Locaria Garcia. Mary met her husband Roland Tovar ad they were married on May 30, 1958. She proudly supported her husband during his 30 year service to our country in the US Air Force by always making sure everything at home was cared for and never causing him a worry during his overseas tours. She loved to cook and bake and showed her love by wanting to fill your belly full. Mary loved her children and grandchildren and was very proud of them. She loved God, going to church and supporting the church in any way she was able. Mary was always very independent and was proud to be a full blooded Cherokee Indian. She loved playing Bingo and visiting with friends. She loved her Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers and her forever favorite ranger was “Pudge”. Mary was preceded in death by her parents Juan and Locaria Garcia, husband Roland Tovar, son Pete Salazar, brother Paul Martinez, and sister Guadalupe Martinez Paz and Josephine Cavazos. She is survived by daughters and sons in law, Alice and Rudy Soto of San Angelo, Pamela and Barry Cassaday of Alaska; brother, Joe Martinez; sisters, Nellie Cortez, Betty Serrano, Delia Martinez, Tina Koicuba, Chana Guzman, Jennie Gamache and Maria Romero; grandchildren, Annette Salazar, Donna Moreno, Danette Cloud, Pete Mendoza Jr, Rene Salazar, Xavier Salazar, Emiliano Salazar, Robert Soto, Rudy Soto, Christi Aborn, Gabriel Soto, Joshua Snow, Joseph Snow, Jeremy Snow, Austin Cassaday, Kaylee Cassaday; along with many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In the last 19 days of her life, Mary was lovingly, compassionately and respectfully cared for by Dr. Templeton and the wonderful nurses, CNA’s and volunteers at Hendrick’s Hospice, for which her family is forever grateful.
