

Raymond “Cowboy” Hillin, 81, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013, at a local nursing facility. Funeral services will be 10:30a.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory Street, with Pastor Chuck Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in Drummond Cemetery, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at a visitation 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Glen Hollowell, Farrin Cunningham, Steve Evans, and Jimmy McElreath.
Raymond was born in Rosebud, Texas on July 1, 1931, the son of Raymond C. and Ida Greenwood Hillin. He married Veronita Englert, the love of his life, on April 12, 1950 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abilene, TX. They were married for 56 years.
He worked as a taxi cab driver in the 1950’s, owned his own gravel trucks, did carpenter work and was a supervisor and truck driver for the City of Abilene Refuse department for 33 years.
Raymond loved riding horses. He was in the Taylor County Posse Riding Club for many years and he rode pony express for Ridge Riders. Raymond also loved hunting, fishing, and attending all his grandkids events.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Veronita Englert Hillin; one son, David Lee Hillin; one sister; and five brothers.
Survivors include one son, Freddy Hillin and wife, Cathy of Clyde, TX; one daughter, Nita Hillin-O’Bar and husband, Mark of Abilene, TX; grandchildren, Shanna Hillin Whitaker, Cassi Hillin Crouch, Ashley Hillin, and Steven O’Bar; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Madison, and Peyton Hankins, and McKinley Crouch; one sister-in-law, Leonita Englert Miller and husband, I.N. “Sonny”; four brothers, Wince Hillin and wife, Winnie of Baytown, TX, Earl Hillin and wife, Deb of Crandall, TX, Gene Hillin and wife, Jan of Saginaw, and Bobby Hillin and wife, Kandie of Azle; several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
