Remedios was born in Abucay, Philippines, on August 4, 1938, to Alejandro Salaya and Maria S. Hizon, and was the eldest daughter of eleven children.
While in the Philippines, she studied teaching in college, and she helped tend her family’s convenience store. There, she met George Jenks, her future husband, who bought bottles of Seven-Up as an excuse for him to stay at the store and court her. They were happily wed for 65 years, and they raised their four children, Michael Jenks, Robert Jenks, David Jenks, and Marie Jenks, together in a loving home.
After moving to the United States, she worked as a librarian and dental hygienist before eventually opening her own sewing business, Remy’s Alterations, which she managed from 1993 to 2020.
Remedios’s lifelong adventurous spirit led her to all corners of the planet. During the 1970s, she embarked on an around-the-world trip with a friend, where she traveled to several countries in Europe and Asia. In her later years, she also voyaged to distant places such as Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey, Greece, and Spain.
A devout Catholic, she was a faithful and active member of Abilene’s Christian and Filipino community. She also cherished her time with her family and friends, and she sought to visit and help them as often as she could. They, in turn, loved her for her warm, kind, cheery personality and her playful, clever wit.
Remedios is survived by her children, Michael Jenks, Robert Jenks, and David Jenks, as well as by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her husband, George Jenks; and her daughter, Remy Marie Jenks.
A visitation and rosary for Remedios will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 08:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, located at 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene, TX 79606.
The funeral mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic church, 826 Cottonwood St, Abilene, TX 79601. Following the service, a committal service will take place at Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery, located at 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene, TX 79606.
