

Sarah Lonette (Cumby) Garrett was born July 20, 1933 to Henry and Juanita Cumby in Abilene, TX. She went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at her residence. Funeral services will be 1:00p.m., Friday, February 3, 2012 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. F. Al Cason officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park Garden of Memories under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. The family will receive friends at a visitation Thursday evening from 6 to 8p.m. at the funeral home.
Sarah was a 1952 graduate of Carter G. Woodson High School. After working 15 plus years at the Abilene State School, she decided to become a full time homemaker, dedicating her time to her family.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in the Mt. Zion First Baptist Church where she was a faithful member until her death. Sarah was an active member of the Lady Aristocrats Social Club where she served as assistant treasurer and was a regular participant in the Senior Citizens Program serving as a member on the G.V. Daniel Senior Citizens Board.
Sarah was married to Elray Garrett in 1970, who preceded her in death in March 2010. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Henry and Juanita Cumby; two brothers, Henry Ward Cumby, Jr. and Harry L. Cumby; two sisters, Vivian Hunter and Kathryn Gray.
Sarah leaves to cherish her memory; four daughters, Sylvia Reed and Jackie Reed both of Abilene, Regina Jones of Ft. Worth, TX and Racquel Garrett of Abilene; four grandchildren, Shamika (Cory) Mack, Qua'Sheda Jones, Joseph Jones, Jr.,and Alexys Garrett; six great-grandchildren, Jayda Jones, Darius Jones, Marques Felder,Traevian Mack,Dre'Shanae Johnson, and Lyric Jones; three sisters-in-law, Doris Cumby of Greenville, SC, Delores Cumby and Gertie Cruse both of Abilene;one surrogate great-grandchild,Torriyan Murray;and a host of nieces,nephews,relatives,and very special friends.
