Tammy Cardenas, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on Tuesday, September 23rd, 2025, in Abilene, Texas, at the age of 61. She was born on September 17th, 1964, in Abilene, to Jerry Dale Slatton and Shirley (Benningfield) Slatton.
After graduating from Abilene High School, Tammy went on to have a long career, working in a variety of positions that ranged from store clerk to management roles. She took pride in her work and in providing for her family, despite facing medical challenges later in life.
Tammy’s greatest joy was her family. She married the love of her life, Ernest Cardenas, on August 14, 1992, after six years of building a strong and loving relationship. The two of them shared many happy memories, especially their love of playing pool together, which brought them closer and gave them countless moments of fun and laughter. Tammy was also a passionate supporter of the Dallas Cowboys, and she loved watching their games and cheering them on.
Tammy is survived by her sons, David Cardenas and wife Heather, and Jessie Cardenas; her grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Shirley Slatton; and her late husband, Ernest Cardenas, who she loved deeply.
A visitation will be held from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM on Friday, October 10, 2025 at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 US Hwy 277 South in Abilene. Funeral services will begin at 12:00 PM on Friday, October 10, 2025 at the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel with Alvin Cardenas officiating. Burial will follow at Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories.
