Vaughney Ray “Woody” Wood, 85, passed away on Monday, September 22, 2014 at a local hospital in Abilene, TX. Funeral services will be 10:00a.m., Friday, September 26, 2014 at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 Hwy 277 South with Mike Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00p.m. at the funeral home.
Vaughney was born on November 21, 1928 in Zama, Mississippi to Matthew and Clara Vowell Wood. He married Nellie Sue Ballard on February 4, 1950 in Jackson, Mississippi. Woody earned an associate’s degree in upholstery while in college and then joined the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the Air Force in 1970 after 21 ½ years of service. Woody and Nellie then moved to Abilene from Rome, NY. He began working for Hendrick Medical Center and retired after 25 years. Woody was of Baptist faith and was a Mason.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Raypherd Eugene Wood; and a grandson, Scotty Wood. Survivors include his wife, Nellie Sue Wood of Abilene; a son, Scotty Dwayne Wood and wife, Mary of Abilene; a granddaughter, Kimberley Coleman and husband, Chris; great-grandchildren, Parker, AmandaGrace, and Walker Coleman; and several nieces and nephews.
