Manuel Leon Aroz, a beloved member of the Ajo, Arizona community, passed away on October 18, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on December 16, 1929, in Ajo, Arizona, Manuel spent the majority of his life in his hometown, leaving briefly in 1935 before returning in 1944, where he lived for 79 years.
In the early 1950s, Manuel chose Ajo as his permanent home, driven by the hope of building a meaningful and secure life for his family. He was known for his determination and commitment to providing for his loved ones, never allowing obstacles to define him. Manuel's career as a railroad laborer with the Tucson New Corelia Gila Bend Railroad (TCGB) spanned 35 years, retiring in 1982. He carried himself with integrity, treating his work as a reflection of his character and upbringing, and was known for his honesty, compassion, and strong work ethic.
Manuel married Erlinda Rojo Aroz in January 1951 in Yuma, Arizona. Together, they raised five children: Manuel, Francisco, Maria, Gerardo, and Rafael. His family was his greatest joy, and he cherished his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather, finding immense happiness in the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A devoted member of the Ajo Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Manuel was actively involved in various church activities. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Legion of Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and served as a Cursillista, Eucharistic Minister, and Sacristan. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he found joy in volunteering at the church and praying for others.
Manuel enjoyed spending time outdoors, particularly gardening, fishing, hunting, and camping at Oak Creek Canyon with his family. He looked forward to picnics and exploring the desert, finding peace in nature.
Manuel is survived by his children, Francisco Aroz and Gerardo Aroz of Ajo, Arizona, Maria Alvillar (Frank Alvillar) of Ajo, Arizona, and Manuel Aroz (Julianne Lewis) of Phoenix, Arizona. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Erlinda Rojo Aroz, his son, Rafael Ignacio Aroz, his grandsons, Joseph Lorenzo Alvillar and Paul Lorenzo Alvillar, his parents, Rafael F. Aroz and Maria Luisa Aroz, and his siblings, Rafael Aroz, Ruben Aroz, Reginaldo Aroz, Anita Reyes, and Guadalupe Goff.
A celebration of Manuel's life will be held on November 1, 2025, in Ajo, Arizona. A prayer service will take place at 9:30 am at 100 N Pizal Ln, followed by a religious ceremony at 10:00 am. The committal service will be held at Ajo Cemetery, 1181 Cedar St., from 11:20 am to 12:00 pm.
Pallbearers for the services will be Frank Alvillar Jr, Joseph Alvillar, Steven Montano, Oscar Reyes, Connor Aroz, Christian Aroz, Ramon Alvillar, and Manuel Aroz Jr.
Manuel Leon Aroz leaves behind a legacy of honesty, integrity, and compassion, having lived a full and impactful life. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
