Bernadine was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, James “Mickey” Murdock MacEwen, Jr.; her adored parents Adelbert and Ada Owens; her siblings Elizabeth, Leona, and Woodrow; granddaughter Khrista.
Loving mother of Jean L MacEwen and Gail Atwood (Hank); dear grandmother of Kirsten H (Johnathan) Easton, Christa (Brian) Nye, and Andrew (Carrie) Archual; and great-grandmother of Pierce Murdock (her little buddy), Baby on the way, Owen, Braden, Stella, Ophelia, and Desmond.
Bernadine was born in Westlake, Ohio (formally called Dover, Ohio) and was a proud member of the 1943 Dover High School graduating class. She worked very hard during the war effort (WWII) in the Cleveland Bomber Plant (now the I-X Center) supporting the production of the B-29 Superfortress Bomber as the Mail Girl, riding a bicycle throughout the plant. She got the job because of her amazing smile (the war effort needed someone to be happy and light hearted to get through the rough days). All while patiently waiting for the love of her life, Mickey, to return from the European Theater to marry her.
Bernadine’s joy was her family and the center of her life. She had the privilage of having her parents live with her family until their passing. Then she and Mickey lived with Jean and Kirsten and finally she transitioned to living with Jean and Kirsten’s family...getting to be Great “Nama.” She loved entertaining friends in her home with her famous pies and traveling on numerous cruise vacations with Mickey, Jean, and Kirsten (and her family.)
She also enjoyed life through bowling, dancing (legendary jitterbug couple,) many train travels, care giving for her entire family, watching baseball games, and supporting the Olympics. She spread cheer as the head gift wrapper at Halle Brothers for 20 years. Her motto: “Where you go, I go. The car goes, I’m in it.” She went everywhere with Jean and Kirsten and loved every minute of it. Her smile was the light of everyone's day, and her kindness was unparalleled by all who knew her. She attended the First United Methodist Church of Akron and was a 50 year member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Akron. She was in the American Legion Auxiliary and a descendent of early settlers that arrived the year after the Mayflower in 1621.
