Forest W. Thomas, lovingly known as Bill, passed away on June 22, 2025 at the age of 83 in Akron, Ohio. A devoted husband, father, grandfather (Papa), and friend, Bill lived a life marked by quiet strength, unwavering love for his family, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
After graduating from Coventry High School in 1960 he started to build a life before being drafted to serve his country as a helicopter medic in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War (1968-1969)—a role that exemplified his courage and compassion. After his service he married the love of his life in May of 1973 and built a long and steady career at the Akron Beacon Journal, retiring in 2001.
A man of many interests, Bill was an avid reader and a lover of history. Every book he finished was carefully inscribed with the date, the weather, and a note about what his grandchildren did that day—a small but enduring act that reflected just how deeply he cherished them. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he devoted himself to their care and upbringing. He could often be found taking them on long walks and short talks, creating the kind of memories that live forever in a family’s heart.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Penny; his daughter Tara (Gray) Silva; his son-in-law, Jason (Stephanie) Zak; and his beloved grandchildren: Julianna Zak, Dawson Stephen, Lauren Stephen, Ansley Zak, and Allison Zak. Brother-in Law Geoff (Kathy) Price, sister-in laws Debbie (Mark) Demich, Gara Alderman, and Kathy “K” Price. Many nieces and nephews who loving called him Uncle Bill.
Bill is preceded in death by his daughter Andrea Thomas Zak, his parents William John Thomas and Mabel Lucille Thomas, his sister Sonjia Thomas and brother Bob Thomas.
The family will be receiving family and friends at the Silva family residence on Friday, June 27, 2025 from 4pm to 8pm. Flowers will be accepted at the funeral home until 3PM Friday.
Bill’s legacy is one of love, selflessness, and quiet wisdom—a life well-lived, and deeply felt by all who knew him.
