Teddy Nantambi Mwonyonyi, of the Elephant clan, — beloved educator, public servant, mother, sister, grandmother, greatgrandmother, and friend—passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026, surrounded by family.
Born in Uganda to Bernard Ssozi Kikomeko and Anna Nakibirango, Teddy devoted her life to teaching and to the people she served. Her warmth, infectious smile, and generous spirit touched students and colleagues across Ohio. She was honored multiple times as State of Ohio Teacher of the Year in both the Cleveland and Akron school systems.
Teddy loved Lingala music and dance; her joyful steps and laughter are unforgettable. She was a founding member of the UgOhio Association, and she had a rare gift for making everyone she met feel seen and heard. Whether reconnecting with old friends or meeting someone new, Teddy approached each day with grace.
She is survived by her daughter Babiya Polk; sons Polo Mwonyonyi, Sekemia Mwonyonyi, Wasilwa Mwonyonyi, Burudi Mwonyonyi, and Namunyu Mwonyonyi; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a wide circle of family and friends in Ohio and Uganda.
Her legacy of service and kindness lives on in the many lives she shaped.
“Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure. She is loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.”
