Walter F Feist
June 24, 1930 – July 27, 2018
“Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.”
Walter F. Feist, of West Akron, Ohio, passed away at the Hospice of Western Reserve in Medina on July 27, 2018 after a brief illness. Walter was born on June 24, 1930 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Conrad and Emma (Bauer) Feist. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Grace Caley Feist and his son Randy Feist. He is survived by his son Roger Feist, of Columbus, his granddaughter Caley Feist of San Antonio, nieces Tammy (Paul) Maxwell and Terry Moore of Largo, Florida, and his beloved fiancée and companion of the past eight years, Ann Mauch.
Walter served as a Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War before graduating from Ohio State University with a degree in Engineering specializing in Industrial Ceramics. Walter spent his professional career working in that industry before retiring from Newell Porcelain.
Walter will be remembered by his family and all those who knew and loved him as a strong and gentle spirit who had a great appreciation for the beauty of the world around him. He was an exceptionally skilled potter and ceramics artist. He delighted in classical music, especially performed live, cooking and crossword puzzles. He loved all animals, especially cats, and had a soft spot for strays. One of Walter’s most striking qualities was his seeming ability to defy the ravages of age and time. Prior to the onset of his final illness, people routinely expressed amazement upon hearing that he was eighty-eight years of age. For all intents and purposes he appeared to be a man at least twenty years younger. His bravery, kindness, sense of humor and dignity in the face of terminal illness will not soon be forgotten.
In accordance with Walter’s wishes, there will no formal funeral service and in lieu of flowers, he requested that donations be made in his name to the Carroll Animal Protective League, a no kill at P.O. Box 353, Carrollton, Ohio 44615.
