OBITUARY

Angel Yodanis Nova

January 27, 1964July 8, 2020

Angel Yodanis Nova was born to Juan Mendez and Tomasina Nova on January 27th, 1964 in Los Jovillos, Azua, Dominican Republic. In 1987 Angel was selected as one of a few recipients of the Presidential Initiative Island Caribbean (PTIIC) scholarship program and was sent to Michigan (Initially to Ferris State University and later on to Michigan State University) to further his education. Angel received his Bachelor’s Degree and committed his life to mentoring youth at Starr Commonwealth for nearly 30 years.

Angel moved to Albion, Michigan in 1990 to start a family with Pamela Nova, whom he was married to until 2003. They were always fully committed and devoted parents to their only son Anthony Jodanes Nova. Angel also cherished his lifelong friendship with the Suarez family, whom he considered as his own.

Anyone who knows Angel, knows he was supportive and always willing to lend a helping hand. He often put other people’s needs over his own. Angel loved his family and always wanted to have a great time. You could often find him listening to Merengue or Salsa with a big smile on his face, sharing the Dominican culture.

Angel is preceded in death by his mother and father. However, he will forever be remembered by his son Anthony, whom he loved more than life itself. He will also be remembered by his sister Thelma (A second mother to him), his siblings, and many nieces and nephews who reside in The Dominican Republic and Venezuela. He also leaves behind his special friend Ruth Gundy of Jackson, MI.

Angel Yodanis Nova departed this earth unexpectedly at his home in Albion, Michigan on July 8th, 2020 at the age of 56. He now rests in peace with his parents and brother. His final resting place will be in The Dominican Republic per his wishes. Visitation will be held at Kevin J. Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Dr, Albion, MI on July 15th from 3:00pm – 7:00pm.

Due to the current restrictions with COVID-19, please be prepared to practice social distancing and adhere to the current guidelines during the family hour.

Angel was one of the nicest people we’ve met in all of our years at Starr. He would always greet us with a big smile and a kind comment. His love and care for the children he served was truly remarkable and his enthusiasm for helping others was always sincere. He will be remembered for his kind heart and dedication to children and his colleagues. What a great legacy he leaves for others to model. We extend our most heartfelt sympathy and condolences to all of Angel’s family and friends. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Angel,

Anyone who met you fell in love with your infectious personality and smile. Till this day I remember you telling me about becoming a dad and that Anthony and Landry would grow up together because they were the same age. Your dedication to Starr impacted so many youth and fellow staff. Everyone loved being around you. You turned many a bad days into good ones with your smile and laughter. And your accent, your accent made people question what you said, but in the same breath, made people love what you were saying. Rest easy brother, our lives were better because of you!
