
She was born in Portland ME and at age two moved to Akron NY. Orphaned at age 10 then raised by her 64 year old granny and graduated from Buffalo State Teachers college before becoming a 1944 war bride of John H. Huber (deceased in 2008). After spending her first years of marriage, proudly serving in the United States Navy as a Yeoman First Class in the W.A.V.E.S., she helped raise a family of five children during her 65 years of marriage. She was able to call many places and four states home during her life, but Albion is where she called home the longest, first arriving in 1950 with her husband to help open the Corning Glass works. Then a return to Corning NY for four years while John attended college and Dorothy taught grade school. 1960 – 1985 she spent teaching and raising her family in the Pittsburgh PA area. Finally she returned to Albion and spent her retirement years in the same neighborhood she had lived in her first seven years in Albion.
During her long and joyful life she enjoyed 30 years of teaching primary education in three different states. She was an avid reader and spent many years volunteering at the Albion District Library. She had a passion for theater and loved her time on stage with Community Theater. Over the years Dorothy had been a member of many PTO’s, a Den Mother, Girl Scout leader, member of the Eastern Star, United Methodist Women’s organization, mentor/teacher with project Literacy, Albion Library assistant, member of church choirs, bell choir member, Little Women singing group, performer in community theater, civically active in her home communities, and most of all a wonderful mother to her five children and grandmother to 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband John H. Huber, sister Kathryn Zink and brother Fredrick Winchester.
Dorothy is survived by her sister Jean (Don) Wilson, Akron, NY; sons John (Janice) Huber Troy MI, Steven (Sue) Huber Southfield MI, David Huber Albion MI, Daniel (Debbi) Huber Clifton Park NY, daughter Judy (Tom) Mecouch Mifflinburg PA; 10 nieces, 3 nephews, 11 grand children and 1 great grandchild.
There will be a Memorial Service held at the First United Methodist Church , 600 E. Michigan Avenue, Albion on Friday, January 20,2012 at 4:00 PM and a full military honors burial service at Fort Custer National Cemetery at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 20, 2012.
