On June 24, 2025, with her son and daughter by her side, Florence’s Lord and Savior whispered to her, “You have fought a good fight, you have finished your course, you have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for you a crown of righteousness. Then He reached out His hand and welcomed her through the Pearly Gates of Heaven. Florence Spicer Wallace was born May 3, 1927 in Yazoo County, Mississippi, to Sam and Paralee (Griffin)Spicer. She was the sixth child of thirteen children and they loved each other dearly.
Florence moved to Albion, Mi in 1952 and married Wilce Wallace, Sr. on April 20,1957 and they had six children. Florence and Wilce were also foster parents to over 30 children and she loved each of them like they were her own. She attended school in Vicksburg, Mississippi as a child and later received her High School Diploma from Albion Senior High School. She also received her Cosmetology License under the training of Samella Oliver, in Jackson, Michigan. Although her husband was a great provider, Florence also worked. She was employed by Home Laundry, Albion Community Hospital and Short’s Beauty Shop. She also worked from home as a licensed beautician, where she pressed and curled hair for many years.
She accepted Christ at an early age and continued her christian journey throughout adulthood. She was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church for over 60 years, and was a member of the Senior Choir. While she enjoyed singing all of the spirit filled songs, her two favorite songs were, “If I got my ticket” and “This morning when I rose.” When she led those songs, you could definitely see the spirit moving in her soul! Florence loved her pastor, Rev. Fred Alexander, Jr. and was quick to let you know.
Florence loved to cook and bake and was known for her famous Jelly Cakes, that many people emulated, but never mastered. During her younger years, Florence loved gardening and canning, a trait she inherited from her “Papa”, Sam Spicer, Sr.
She was the most loving and kindhearted person that anyone could meet. She was nonjudgmental and a joy to be around. She loved caring for and joking and laughing with her children and grandchildren. Most of all she loved the Lord and was the epitome of a “Virtuous Woman.” She was, also, “jokingly” known for promising gifts or money to family members and friends, in her own famous words “on the 3rd.”
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Wilce Wallace, Sr.; 2 sons, James Spicer and Doug Davis, daughter, Florence Lorraine Fairley, parents, Sam and Paralee Spicer, brothers, Sam Spicer, Jr. and two infant boys, sisters, Bessie Sims, Laree Simpson, Iree Byrd, Christine Barnes, Julia Patterson, and Mary Ann Spicer.
She leaves to cherish her memories, sons, John (Sallie) Spicer, Grand Rapids, Mi; Tommie Wallace, Albion, Mi; Wilce Wallace, Jr., Spring Arbor, Mi; and Kenneth Christon, Kalamazoo, Mi; daughter, Karen (Candy) Mitchell, Albion, Mi.; grandsons Dr. Terrell Mitchell, LaVar (Keena) Williams, Tony Wallace, Tommie Wallace, John (Valencia) Spicer Jr., Michael (Angela) Witherspoon, Jeremy Embry and Octavius Burrell; granddaughters, Kimyata Fairley, Briahna Mitchell, Maya Wallace, Sherry Spicer, Lorea Spicer, and LaToya Jowyers. 28 great-grandchildren, Rashinique, Serenity, and Meilani with whom she spent countless hours with and loved dearly and 21 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Lula Harris and Geneva Coney both of Albion, Mi; and sister/daughter, Louise Miller, Grand Rapids, Mi.; two special nieces, Bonnie Anglin and Judy Harris, special caregiver Yvette Williams-Jirsaraie and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
