OBITUARY

Gladys C Bishop

June 17, 1942March 9, 2019

Gladys C. Bishop, age 76, of Parma, MI passed away Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. One of Leamon and Sadie (Abshire) Matney’s 18 children, Gladys was born June 17, 1942 in Pike County, KY. She married Eulon “Cleo” Bishop, Jr., who preceded her in death in 1995. Also preceding her are her parents and siblings Mary Louise Matney, Lester Matney, Bertha Adams, Ruby Matney, Pauline Matney, Frank Matney, Bill Matney, Harold Matney, Herman Matney, Scott Matney, Donald Matney, and Jim Matney.

Gladys relocated from Kentucky to Albion with her husband in the mid-60s, eventually making a permanent home in Parma. She retired after working 27 years for Aeroquip (Spring Arbor, MI).

Gladys cared deeply for her family and friends. She always helped others when she could, including babysitting and elder care. She was a longtime member of the Marshall Church of Christ. She did lots of word search puzzles, played dice and cards with her neighbor, and appreciated a cup of black coffee. Gladys had more nicknames than fingers. Even after living most of her life in Michigan, she never lost her accent from “down home.”

Gladys leaves to cherish her memory her son, Matthew (Jessica) Bishop of Jackson; siblings Plennie (Linda) Matney, Tina Rowe, Roger (Ruby) Matney, Trish Ratliff, and Denver Matney; numerous nieces and nephews; and furry cat companion, Pryde.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, March 18 from 4-8 pm at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Dr., Albion, MI.

Services to celebrate Gladys’ life will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 19 at 11am with Elder John Torrey officiating. Burial will follow in Albion Memory Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to Greater Jackson Habitat for Humanity (Jackson, MI).
