Katie Shelters (Tymkew) of Albion, age 85 passed away Saturday, December 3, 2016 in Battle Creek under the loving care of her family and Hospice. She was born June 13, 1931 in Albion the daughter of Pete and Cleo (Vafiadis) Bournelis.
Katie was a graduate of Washington Gardner High School and was a very active member and treasurer of the Vivian Society with the Elks. She was employed over the years by Albion Housing Commission, Wilkings Office Supply and Bilicke Olds. She also was an active member and treasurer of the 1st Presbyterian Church and served as a volunteer with Festival of the Forks.
On November 15, 1953, Katie married Walter John Tymkew; to that union was born a son, Michael; Walter preceded her in death on November 4, 1955. She married James Edward Shelters on September 3, 1961; to that union was born a son, Pete; James preceded her in death on September 18, 2015. Katie is also preceded in death by both her parents, a sister, Mary Tymkew and infant bother, Peter Bournelis.
Katie leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Michael (Debbie) Tymkew, Pete (Jeanette) Shelters, 5 grandchildren: Jenny Tymkew, Sarah (Jamie) Aitken, Michael (Katie) Tymkew II, Carson Shelters, Mollie Shelters, 2 great-grandchildren: Abigail Aitken and Maxwell Tymkew.
Katie’s family will celebrate her life on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 11:00 AM at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Dr., Albion with Pastor Charlotte Ellison officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 3-8 PM. Cremation will follow and she will be laid to rest with James in Riverside Cemetery.
