

Lena Mae Simmons, A new day dawned in the life of Percy and Attie Mae Rodgers of Talucha, Alabama on September 12, 1920 with the birth of their First precious Daughter, Lena Mae Rodgers. On the morning of Sunday, December 4, 2011, the gates of Heaven open up for the home coming of one of God’s Children.
She met and fell in love with Poindexter Burton. They married in 1940 and later had a son, Pastor George Burton. Later in life in 1960 she met and married Charles Simmons of Albion, Michigan. Both are deceased.
Lena was educated in the Talucah School System, she worked at Huntsville Arsenal, she later moved to Albion in 1954. She worked in the Nursing System in Marshall and Battle Creek for 27 years. She was President of the local Nurse’s Union.
Lena loved people, she also had her own Business, the Avon Lady, and she would once a year in the summer have a picnic for the neighborhood children. She was also active in the Community, she was a member of her neighborhood watch program. She was a life time member of Albion N.A.A.C.P. and was Vice-President at one time.
She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church for years, she served on the Usher Board as Chairman, she was on the Nurse’s Guild, and she was an Eastern Star member in Alabama and Michigan.
But most importantly she was a Born Again Christian woman and she loved her Church, True Light Bible Baptist Church, her son Pastor George Burton and First Lady Jackie Burton and her Congregation. She was the Mother of the Church and the Head Usher. Her strength and strong commitment made her the back bone of her family “The Rodgers Family”.
Lena was preceded in death by her parents, Percy and Attie Mae Rodgers, her sister Lucy Mae Jennings, Eula Dee Wallace; Brothers John Percy Jr., O’Brayn, A.J., Tommie and Robert (BeBop) Rodgers.
She leaves in loving Memory, Sisters Coreaster Murphy and Hazel Menifee of Albion and Brother Jimmie(Donzella) Rodgers of Akron, Ohio; two Sister-in-laws Mary, Blondie Rodgers of Akron, OH; son Pastor George (Jackie) Burton; 6 Grandchildren Ricky (Stephanie), Marcus (Fiancé’ Mona), Eric, Craig (Jessica), Carmen (Raymond) McNeil and Bridget(son Dupree) Nunnally; 29 Great Grandchildren and 4 Great Great Grandchildren. A host of loving Nieces, Nephews and other relatives and friends. She will be Greatly Missed. “I HAVE FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT, I HAVE FINISHED MY COURSE, I HAVE KEPT THE FAITH, HENCH FORTH, THERE IS LAID UP FOR ME A CROWN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS……. 2 Timothy 4:7
Funeral Service will be held Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 12:00 P.M. (Noon) at the New Hope Worship Center, 13600- 28 Mile Road, Albion, Michigan 49224. Family Hour will be from 11:00A.M. until time of service. Burial will be at Albion Memory Garden, Albion.
