OBITUARY

Nettie Emma Monroe

September 27, 1924May 26, 2018

Nettie Emma Monroe age 93 of Springport passed away May 26, 2018 at Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice Home in Jackson, Michigan. She was born September 27, 1924 to Glen and Mabel (Peck) Wilbur in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. On May 25, 1941 she married Robert Christian in Defiance, Ohio and he preceded her in death. On March 3, 1956, she married Raeburn “Baldy” Monroe in Springport and he preceded her in death.

Nettie owned “Nettie’s Beauty Shop” on M-99 for thirty years. Her passion was doing all her ladies’ hair. Rather it was a special event or a weekly appointment; she was there for her ladies and that became her circle, many beautiful friendships developed as a result.

She was a social lady and for many years, she was on the local bowing league, sometimes sharing the lanes with her daughters. She enjoyed trips to the local casino, where the girls (Judy and Linda) found it hard to keep up with her! When we would ask her what she wanted for her birthday, she would respond by saying “money for my gambling trip would be great”! It was always an adventure at the shared cabin in Leota, where family and friends congregated on holidays and weekends. Mushroom hunting, bonfires, trips to the river and laughter were a given. She loved to dance (and I’m sure she’s dancing in heaven right now), playing board games, like jitterbug, dominos and card games and you could bet that laughter was always close. Nettie was known for yummy fried chicken, peanut butter balls, chocolates and popcorn.

Her greatest love was her family. She loved getting the family together for dinners, parties, lawn clean up or a family zoo trip. A spur of the moment phone call would lead to a house full of laughter and good food and drinks. She was known for her contagious smile and her open arms, she treated everyone as family. Although she did not live a wealthy life, she was rich. She always said, “I have such a great family and I love you all”.

Nettie is survived by her daughters, Judith (Raymond) Winchell and Linda (Rodney) Lange; son-in-law, Ronald Johnson; 9 Grandchildren; 20 Great Grandchildren; 11 Great Great Grandchildren; Brothers, Max and Frank. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert Christian; husband, Raeburn Monroe; infant daughter, Gloria Jean; daughter, Mary Lou Spencer; daughter, Sandra Johnson; granddaughter, Cindy Winchell; brothers, Clare and Monroe.

Funeral Service will be Friday, June 1, 2018 at 11:00AM with visitation starting at 10:00AM at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Drive, Albion, Michigan 49224 with Pastor Al Henson Officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Albion.

To my family; We've been bessed with such a beautiful and loving Matriarch.
One who has taught us how to love, to be kind, to be accepting, to forgive, to be grateful and always have open arms.
As we move forward, we'll take with us her ability to see each day as a gift. ♥️

I Remember Nettie from my childhood as many a trip was made there when Mom took me in for a haircut or perm. I always enjoyed the way she treated everyone. I am very surprised to learn that Nettie was the mother of an old co-worker, and grandmother to two very sweet friends, Laurie and Cindy (RIP). I can only pray that I am remembered as Nettie is in this Obituary. It tells more than just a brief Dash, it tells us all how Nettie lived, loved and laughed. What a beautiful send off. My deepest sympathy to the family. I know you will always remember her with love. Sincerely, Sandy
