Sarah (Sally) A. Daniels, age 78, rests peacefully in the arms of God after a hard fought battle with cancer. She was the tenth of twelve children born to Leo and Isabell Koch and she loved her huge family dearly. Sally’s childhood home was a large family farm in Babcock where she developed her strong work ethic. After graduating from Homer High School, she continued her education in Miami, Florida. To help pay for college, she worked as a roller-skating waitress at a drive-in restaurant and as a water ski performer. From Miami, she travelled to Cuba and Venezuela, working for the government, but home truly is where her heart was, so she headed back home to the Albion area where she found love.
Sally married Robert Lloyd Daniels and provided a loving home for three children, Richard (Mary) Daniels, David (Kurt) Daniels and Kimberly (Richard) Sass. Together, they enjoyed camping and toured most of the national parks of this great country. Kim is quite certain she slept in a sleeping bag for half of her childhood years. During any given May, no morel mushroom was safe from Sally and Bob and other adventures included eating lobsters in Maine, sliding down glaciers in British Columbia, visiting Indians in Moab and traveling coast to coast.
Sally’s home and pool were always open to a slew of nieces and nephews and she enjoyed time with her grandchildren, Becky Young, Rob Daniels and their families. Her deceased husband, Bob, may have been her great love but her youngest grandson, Matthew Sass, certainly was in the running. Her world truly revolved around him and she spoiled him shamelessly. Sally went to endless school events, bought truckloads of goat treats at Binder Park Zoo and was the grandparent we all would hope to be.
Later in life, Sally spent winters in Arizona with longtime companion, Tom VanVelzen. She was active in a St. John’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society. Sally was an amazing mom, grandmother, and aunt. She was generous with her love, time and money and had a philanthropist’s heart.
