Margaretmary “Peggy” Dobmeier, a licensed funeral director and co-owner of John E. Roberts Funeral Home, died Thursday in her Eggertsville home. She was 59.
Born in Buffalo, NY, Peggy attended St. Margaret’s School and Holy Angels Academy. She majored in Mathematics and graduated from Buffalo State. She graduated from Simmons School of Mortuary Science in Syracuse, NY and then pursued her career in the family funeral business. Peggy has been an integral part of the family business for over 35 years.
She is the President of the Erie-Niagara Funeral Directors Association, has been a member of the Board of Directors of Erie-Niagara for 10 years and an active member for 35 years.
Together, with her brother James, she owned and operated John E. Roberts Funeral Homes in North Buffalo and Amherst. In 2008, Peggy and James acquired the Harry A. Wedekindt Funeral Home. She was recognized and celebrated by the Buffalo News as female second generation business owner in the early 2000's. Peggy was a member of the Hertel-North Park Businessmen's Association.
Along with other family members she is a member of the United Irish American Association. The Roberts family have been division marshalls and have led the first Division of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade for more than 50 years, and still do today. In addition to being a member of the Twentieth Century Club, Peggy enjoyed summers at the Buffalo Canoe Club and joining her husband, past Commodore Robert M. Dobmeier Jr. at all of the Buffalo Yacht Club events.
Peggy was a former President of the Cheektowaga Zonta, and a proud member of the Holy Angels Academy Parents Guild and Alumni Board. She was honored for her service in 2005 as the recipient of the Ruth Reinhardt Award for dedicated service to the Academy.
Peggy was a parishioner of St. Benedict Catholic Church, and was a member of the parents association. Peggy co-founded the “Dare to Dream” fundraiser, now in its twentieth year. She was also a Eucharistic minister and coordinated parish phone-a-thons and other activities for Catholic Charities.
She was a wife of 29 years to Robert M. Dobmeier, Jr. of Amherst, together they raised Mary of Arlington, Va., Anne, and Robert III both of Amherst, NY. She is survived by her brothers, John of (Columbus, Ohio, Michael of Williamsville and James Roberts of East Amherst and her sister Jacqueline DiMaggio of Spartanburg, South Carolina.
