Bailey "Buddy" Shell

Buddy lived a long and meaningful life defined by devotion to his family, a strong work ethic, and a genuine appreciation for the friendships and activities that brought him joy. He retired from the University of Tennessee after more than 42 years of dedicated service, where he built lasting relationships and was respected for his many years of commitment to the university community.

An avid sportsman, Buddy was an accomplished bowler and an especially talented golfer. He spent many enjoyable years on the golf course, where he valued both the competition and the fellowship of the game. He was also a proud member of the Green Turf Golf Association, sharing his love of golf and forming many enduring friendships.

Buddy is survived by his loving, devoted wife and companion of 48 years, Janice Marie Shell; his children, Jerome Shell, Angelia (Michael) Kimbrough, Sherry (Michael) Harris, Venice Foster, Crystal (Shannon) Sims-Shell, and Linda Lee, Jackie Owen, Shannon Roach, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brother, William “David” (Pincie) Shell; his devoted friends, Edith Fleet and Henry Muckle; as well as many extended family members and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah E. Shell; his siblings, Cothran Amogene Schofield and Paul Neal Shell; and other cherished family members and loved ones who passed before him.

Throughout his 90 years, Buddy built a legacy of family, friendship, dedication, laughter, and countless treasured memories. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but the life he lived and the memories he created will remain a lasting part of his family for generations to come.

August 18, 2026 Family and friends are invited to gather at Sherwood Chapel, 3176 Airport Highway, Alcoa, Tennessee 37701, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m., with the graveside service taking place from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
