A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, David dedicated his life to serving both his country and those he held dear. He was known for his sharp wit, brilliant mind, and a sense of humor that could light up any room—especially when paired with one of his famously terrible dad jokes. His signature move, the legendary "eye roll of love," became his loving trademark, a silent but powerful expression of affection that will be missed dearly.
David was most at home in the great outdoors—whether hunting, camping, or just soaking in the peace of nature. An excellent craftsman, he could build, fix, or tinker with just about anything.
Above all else, David cherished his role as a father and “Pop Pop.” His love for his family was unwavering, and his generous, caring spirit made him a true friend to many. He took great pride in the lives and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, and was always ready with advice, a helping hand, or a well-timed joke.
David was preceded in death by his father, Charles Casper Kerns.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Kerns; daughters: Dr. Charli Kerns Elder (Josh), Meryl Kerns (Curt), and Rebecca Wooden; sons: Ovince Saint Preux, Alex Wooden, and Patrick Wooden; grandchildren: Kendall Frances and Derek Molter; his beloved mother, Mildred “Midge” Kerns; sister, Dee Manning (Tim); brother, Don Kerns (Michelle); and The Gooch.
Family and friends are invited to gather and honor the remarkable life of a man who gave so much of himself to others on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Graystone Presbyterian Church, 139 Woodlawn Pike, Knoxville, TN 37920. David will be laid to rest at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery.
David’s legacy is one of love, laughter, service, and strength. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Online condolences and fond memories may be shared with the Kerns family at www.sherwoodchapel.com
