

Edward “Wayne” Mitchell, born on January 28, 1944, left his home on earth to be with his angel, Brenda, on October 15, 2025. Wayne was born and raised in South Knoxville. After graduating from South High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Wayne returned home in 1969 after serving his country for 4 years. Afterwards, Wayne married the love of his life, Brenda Sue Underwood Mitchell, on November 7, 1970. They were married for 50 years. Wayne and Brenda welcomed two children between the ages of 1973 and 1975 and raised them in Louisville. He worked tirelessly as a machinist to support his family and later retired from American Automotive and Machine. Wayne was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He adored his grandchildren. Wayne had a passion for raising and breeding Appaloosa horses, especially his favorite, Joe. He was a Ford, John Deere, and sporting event enthusiast. Especially, when it was for his grandchildren. One of Wayne’s favorite past times was attending cattle auctions.
Wayne is preceded in death by his wife Brenda; parents Helen and Edward Mitchell; in-laws J.L. and Marie Underwood; sister and brother-in-law Pat and Carl Allen and brother-in-law Alvin Poore.
He is survived by sons Michael (Wendy) and Dan (Carissa); grandchildren Darren, Nola, Brody, Selena (Jason), and Athena (Michael); great-grandchildren Asher and Iris; sister Phyllis Poore; brother Jimmy Mitchell; sister-in-law Judy (Byron) Reamer and several nieces and nephews.
The family welcomes friends to a Visitation on Monday, October 20, 2025, to Sherwood Chapel and Memorial Gardens from 9:30am-10:30am with a Funeral Service at 10:30am to follow. Family and friends will gather in the Garden of Gethsemane at 11am for a Graveside Service.
