Katharine “Angy” Phillips Bryant passed away January 6, 2013. She was born August 30, 1921 in Akron, Ohio and later moved with her family to Atlanta, Georgia and North Carolina before settling in Tennessee where she spent most of her life.
Preceded in death by husband Harley Brentley Bryant, Sr., parents Robert Glenn Phillips, Sr., and Madge Stiles Phillips, sisters Virginia Phillips Hargis, Ruthell Phillips Bryant and brother Robert Glenn “Bob” Phillips, Jr. Survived by children Sybil Bryant Gamble (fiance Golman H. Hall), Harley Brentley Bryant, Jr. (Janice); grandchildren Rodney Bryant Gamble (Patti), Harley Brentley Bryant III (Natasha), Alexander William Bryant (fiance Donna McCarter) and Nena Maria Bryant; great-grandchildren Emily and Austin Gamble, Westin and Eric Bryant and Ava Bryant; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Katharine taught school in Blount County for 42 years, most of those at Lanier and one year at Carpenters. She pioneered the first Special Education program in East Tennessee at Fairview. She also taught one year in Monroe County. Katharine had a great love for her students and they loved her.
She enjoyed traveling, arts, crafts and nature, especially sunsets, mountains and waterfalls. She was an avid reader and a master story-teller with a great affection for animals and birds, especially dogs, eagles and hummingbirds. She was a life-long member of Nelson Chapel Church of Christ.
A special thank you to her “best buddy” Pamela “Val” Lane for her unending love and care of Katharine and to husband Jack for taking care of the dogs. Sharing their grandchildren Hannah and Logan Robbins brought Katharine much joy.
The late Sheila Porter Rhyne's loving acts of kindness will never be forgotten. Special thanks to Kenneth McSpadden for making Katharine's life better in so many ways. Catherine Culp's many cheerful visits will always be cherished. Much appreciation is given to niece Judy Bryant for her support throughout Katharine's illness and to her fellow employees and owners of City Drug. Susan Martin Harris was a special angel who brought many smiles to Katharine with her attention and gifts. The family would like to thank everyone who came to visit Katharine and to those who brought their pets.
Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation went above and beyond with their loving care and affection during Katharine's stay. The personal touch and many kindnesses will forever be remembered.
The family will receive friends at Sherwood Chapel and Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, from 11:00a.m. to 12:00p.m. The funeral service will be immediately following with Tom Maxwell officiating.
