

Dr. William Buford Campbell, age 86, of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away at home on Sunday, April 24, 2022. William was a member of Concord United Methodist Church, he was also a member of the Shriners, The Scottish Rite, and was a 33 degree Mason. Dr. Campbell was a registered professional engineer in Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. He holds several United States patents. Colonel Campbell retired from TNSG general staff serving as Liaison officer to the 134th. Air Refueling Wing Tennessee Air National Guard, McGhee Tyson ANG base. He had more than 40 years of experience in research management. Dr. Campbell served on several government advisory boards and public and private corporate boards. He published more than 60 professional papers, chaired numerous symposia, and edited five proceedings and one set to master engineering specifications. He has been honored for his continuous 25 years of service to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), he is a three-time recipient of Sigma XI Research Prizes, and Tau Beta Pi (UT) named him Eminent Engineer. Academic activities include professorship at The Ohio State University (tenured) and the University of Tennessee, as well as several adjuncts and visiting professorships at ETSU, Virginia Tech, Louisiana Tech, University of Florida, and other national institutions. Dr. Campbell was preceded in passing by his parents, William and Bertha Campbell; son, Matthew Campbell. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving and dedicated wife, Lynn Powell Campbell; son, William Campbell II; Daughters, Lisa Campbell Shipley, Heather Campbell Jamerson, Merritt Powell (Greg) Dodge, Cheryl Powell (Bill) Storey, Ellyn Powell (Scott) Brewer; thirteen Grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several close friends. A Memorial Service to honor the life of Dr. Campbell will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 2:00PM at Concord United Methodist Church, 11020 Roane Dr., Knoxville, TN 37934, with Larry Trotter to officiate.
