He was born in Calgary, Alberta on February 6, 1939 and moved to Vancouver at a young age. After graduating from John Oliver high school, he travelled around Europe and then pursued a career in policing. It was a dream job for him while proudly serving the City of Vancouver for 37 years, retiring in 1999.
Bill wore many hats. He was a devoted husband to Ann, his wife of 62 years, a wonderful role model to his sons, Chris (wife Janet) of Melbourne, Australia and Rob (wife Kim) of Surrey, BC and an adoring grandfather to Courtney (28), Mitchell (23), Dylan (22) and Ryan (20). During his youth, he played football and soccer and after becoming a Dad, he spent a long time coaching and managing box lacrosse teams. He was so very proud of his boys when they both continued to play and coach lacrosse successfully for many years. In retirement, he experienced a devastating stroke but with help and determination, he was able to live at home for 10 years and could be seen cheering on his grandsons in fields and arenas all over B.C.
Maui was his favorite vacation spot but he always spent summers enjoying time at Yellowpoint Lodge and our cabin on Lake Whatcom. Working in the garden was just a prelude to sitting on the patio enjoying a beer, the fruits of his labour and watching the birds at the feeders.
After he lost his ability to do many things, he was content with his circumstances, never complaining, even though it was often challenging. He was a wonderful man with strong values, a great work ethic, treated everyone with respect, valued friendships, made us laugh (often at himself) and was loving, supportive and always dependable. He will be missed by so many people.
A private family celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date.
