James Scott Cox
August 20, 1935 – September 2, 2019
James “Jim” Scott Cox was born in Tull, AR on 20 August 1935. Jim was born Deaf to parents Gleason William Cox and Virgie Velma “Nanny” Hughes-Cox-Morris in Tull, AR. He had two siblings, Norman Cox and Louise Cox-Hollaway. He was also raised by step-father John E. Morris.
He attended public school through his teenage years, then transferred to high school at The Arkansas School for the Deaf where he was graduated. He loved all sports, but his favorites were baseball and football. His favorite sports teams included the St. Louis Cardinals, Arkansas Razorbacks, and the Dallas Cowboys. Jim was very proud of the fact that, as a child, he played baseball with a future “Hall of Fame” winning professional baseball player, Brooks Robinson.
Jim met his true love, Alice Marian Fillingham in Little Rock, AR in 1960. Alice lived above the beauty salon that Jim’s mother, Nanny, used and she introduced them. After a short engagement, they were married on February 02, 1962.They had two children together, Roger Cox and Jayme Cox; and they adopted a third, John Jay Cox, who was also Deaf. Jim was an avid bowler, and he bowled for many local teams with his Deaf friends.
Jim was an active member in his church, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Jim attended the Antioch Deaf Congregation since 1986. Jim left this earth and went to heaven on 02 September 2019 at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock, AR, surrounded by his family.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 57 years, Alice Marian Fillingham-Cox of Harrison, AR; their two children and spouses, Roger Cox and Katie of Bryant, Jayme Cox-Pultro and her husband Gary of Bryant. Jim was also blessed with six grandchildren, Tyler Cox, Ryan Cox, Nicholas Pultro and his wife Heather, Jacob Pultro and his wife Claudia, Zachary Pultro and his wife Ashley, and Joshua Pultro; and three great-grandchildren, Austyn, Max and Luna-Leigh.
Jim was a special guy whose smile would light up a room. Jim was as tough as nails but always offered a warm smile to anyone he encountered. He was deeply loved by many.
