John was a graduate of Harrison High School and the University of Central Arkansas, where he met and then married Ellen Kew Wallis on June 4, 1977. John majored in mathematics and had a minor in physics. He was a mainframe computer programmer for banks, insurance companies, and government agencies.
John enjoyed hunting, target shooting, woodworking, and reading about military and American history. He was known for his expressive and resonant speaking and singing voice. He was also known for his jokes and storytelling abilities. John served as the music director at Alliance Bible Church in the 1990’s. He sang in the choir at Geyer Springs First Baptist Church, where he performed as Isaiah at their biannual Easter production, “The Kingdom.” He also enjoyed dancing with his wife, Ellen, with the Ballroom, Latin, and Swing Social Dance Association of Little Rock.
John was a former president of the Arkansas Rifle and Pistol Association, a concealed carry instructor, a life-long NRA member, and was influential in the first concealed carry legislation in Arkansas. In target shooting, he achieved the levels of: high master, long range; master, mid-range; expert, small-bore prone. John was a passionate advocate of self- and home-defense, training at Thunder Ranch and serving on the Security Team at Geyer Springs First Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Kenneth Wallis.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ellen Wallis; his daughter, Crystal Graves, her husband, Scott Graves, and their children, Alice and Charles, all of Little Rock; his son, Daniel Wallis, and his fiancee, Memory Waddle, of San Antonio, TX; his brother Ken Wallis and his family, of both Harrison and Little Rock; and many more relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, November 7, 2021 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Pinecrest Memorial Park. Funeral service will be held Monday, November 8, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Geyer Springs First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park.
