Anthony (Tony) Peter Constandy, 88, of Alexandria, Virginia passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 13, 2020. He was born February 19, 1932 in Goshen, New York, to the late Peter Kostas Constandy and Cecelia Grammas Constandy. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-one years, Kathleen (Kae) in 2011, and their infant son, John Arthur, in 1965. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Deno (1944), John (2001), Stacy (2008), and Peter (2014). The fourth of five children, Tony grew up in Goshen and in Bridgeport, CT, where the family relocated prior to WWII. He graduated from Bassick High School and Fairfield University. Following service in the United States Army, he settled in the Washington, D.C. area and ultimately in Alexandria in 1961, where he and Kae raised their family.
Tony began a successful career in the insurance industry in the 1960's. He founded a family owned and operated agency, Penteco, and cultivated many lasting business relationships and friendships over six decades serving the diplomatic and international communities. He and Kae travelled the globe, for both business and pleasure, and always enjoyed learning about new places and cultures. Holiday gatherings in their home were always filled with family, friends, and guests of many international backgrounds. He loved classical music, art, and literature, and enjoyed visiting museum exhibits throughout his life. He was also a lifelong baseball fan, having played in his youth.
Above all, Tony loved laughter. The memories that have been shared with our families during this time have all centered around Dad's smile, his sense of humor, his storytelling and joking, and his ability to bring laughter and smiles to those around him.
Tony is lovingly survived by his children, Peter of Alexandria, Michael of Alexandria, Elisabeth Baynard (Carl) of Wilmington, NC; and four beautiful grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families, his sister-in-law, his childhood and lifelong best friend, and numerous friends and neighbors.
Tony was raised in the Greek Orthodox faith. Trisagion prayers have been chanted for him in Washington, D.C., and Wilmington, NC.
Updated service information: A graveside service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, on August 12, 2021 at 1 p.m. He will be laid to rest with Kae, and their son, John. Guests are asked to arrive 45 minutes before the service, through the main gate.
Until the time when family, friends, and neighbors can gather together to celebrate Tony's life, our family asks that you remember him with a smile and a laugh, as we know that this is how Dad would want to be remembered. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of our parents, Anthony and Kathleen Constandy, to the American Horticultural Society at George Washington’s River Farm, 7931 East Boulevard Drive, Alexandria VA 22308.
