
Barbara Ann Ortland, 80 of Alexandria, passed away at her home on Friday, March 25, 2011 surrounded by her family, after a period of declining health. Born in North Conway, NH on July 12, 1930, she was the daughter of Henry J. Hatch and Muriel (Wheeler) Hatch. She was a member of D.A.R., Alpha XI Delta fraternity for women, Mount Vernon Country Club and a graduate of the University of N. H. where she obtained a degree in political science in 1952. She taught second grade for three years at St. Mary’s Elementary School in Annapolis, MD.
She was predeceased by her first husband Capt. John. N. Morrissey, USN on September 18, 1974. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Captain Warren H. Ortland, USN, her four children, Jane Morrissey Hybsch and husband William Hybsch, Nancy Morrissey and husband Tom Sklopan, Shirley Smith and husband Tim Smith, John N. Morrissey, Jr. and wife Rosie Schubring, and her two stepchildren, Gail Ortland Ortiz and husband Willy and Warren Hall Ortland, Jr., two sisters, Charlotte Brooks and Mary Mezquita, and eight grandchildren, Michelle Ward, Billy Hybsch, Jaclyn Smith, Jamie Smith, Tommy Sklopan, Sam Sklopan, Grace Sklopan and Johna Morrissey.
In her life she was deeply loved by all and her spirit will live on in our hearts forever. She will be remembered for her generosity towards others, her quick wit and her famous comment “not bad”. She considered her greatest accomplishment to be her four children who gave her great pride. She was a devoted wife, mother and friend. She enjoyed traveling extensively all over the world with her husband Warren, Navy football, golfing, playing bridge and the company of her family and many friends.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday April 6, 2011 at Aldersgate Methodist Church, 1301 Collingwood Road, Alexandria, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
