I had the distinct pleasure of having served wit , then, Lt,  Spencer in USS Shangri La (CVA-38) in the Navigation Department.  I was a Seaman, fresh from Boot Camp, and had met the 'Shang' in Greece.  Lt Spencer was our Division Officer and one of the kindest most caring person I met whilst serving in the US Navy.  Later, having taken a commission in the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve,  I recalled Lt Spencer's interaction with the men in his  Navigation  Division and modeled my interactions with 'my' men on his.  A fine man he was, to be sure.  RIP CDR Spencer.

Dear Family,
It's now near the end of 2021, and I just received this note of Cdr. Spencer's passing in 2015 from a fellow officer with whom I served on board the USS Saratoga CV-60.  Reading the memories of so many of Cdr. Spencer's friends was a reminder of what a great individual and Naval Officer he was.  
I was a senior Ensign when Cdr. Spencer came aboard the Sara as the ship's Navigator.  Serving as the Surface Watch Officer in CIC, I had the distinct pleasure and honor of working with Cdr. Spencer during Radar Navigation operations each time we left port and returned.  
There are a lot of Naval Aviators who serve as ship's company in various billets as they progress through their career.  Several with whom I worked knew of my interest in becoming a pilot someday, and encouraged me to pursue that dream.  Cdr, Spencer was prime among those.  Not choosing to make the navy a career, I chose the civilian training route after my time in the service ended.  I plan to fully retire on my 75th birthday next year, capping a nearly 40 year career of flying corporate jets, and I want to give credit to Cdr. Spencer for his part in endlessly encouraging me to pursue that dream.  
Though it's been over 6 years since Cdr. Spencer's passing, I know he is still loved and missed by his family and will always be remembered.  It was truly an honor for me to serve with such a dedicated officer, and gentleman.

Barry and I were classmates for two years at the US Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA in 1967 and 1968.   We also served in Vietnam during 1969/1970.   For the last 20+ years, Barry was my financial advisor at Smith Barney.  We had a great time in Monterey both in school and at social events.   I truly enjoyed our financial relationship;  I always, always, felt that Barry had MY best interests, not Smith Barney's, in mind with every piece of advice that he gave me.
I enjoyed hearing testimonials from his golfing buddies at his memorial service today and can only echo the sentiments expressed.
I will miss his advice and even more his friendship.

Renata and the entire Spencer Family.  I am so saddened to learn that Barry has "flown West"  He was XO/CO in my first flying squadron and a great mentor/advisor.  We had managed to keep track of each other for the past 40+ years and contacted each other every month or so. The older we became, the better we flew!!   No doubt the best CO I ever had the pleasure to work for and a great friend who was an officer and a gentleman. Barry you'll be missed.

Barry was my very personal friend, and mentor in many ways; certainly about golf but more importantly about life. I learned a lot from him and will always treasure that experience. Joining a new club can be a bit intimidating.  Barry was one of the first members to make Tina and me comfortable.  I will never forget his kindness and patience helping me to become a Bandit and what a great golfer around the green.
