Carolyn Ann Almassy, 81, died peacefully in her home in Alexandria, VA, on June 23, 2025, surrounded by loving family. She had suffered from dermatomyositis, an autoimmune disease, for more than 30 years.
Carol was born in Bryn Mawr, PA, on August 18, 1943, and moved with her family to New England and then New York state, finally settling in Manhasset, Long Island, where she graduated from St Mary’s High School in 1961. She would frequently regale her family with tales of her idyllic childhood. She graduated from St Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing in New York City in 1964 and began a career in nursing that spanned 41 years and multiple specialties, finally retiring as a cardiac triage nurse. Cardiology was her favorite.
It was during her senior year at St Vincent’s that she accepted a blind date for the West Point Class of 1964 Ring Hop and captured the heart of her date (and future husband), Bob. They were “pinned” on December 27, 1963; engaged under Kissing Rock in April 1964; and married in Manhasset on December 27, 1964. As a dedicated Air Force wife, she traversed the nation at Bob’s side for the next 61 years, setting up homes in Colorado (thrice), California, Arizona, Ohio(twice), Maryland, and Virginia.
Carol is survived by her husband Bob; their three children Cyndi McGuigan (Shawn), Michael Almassy (Debbie), and Darryl Almassy; her sister Bobbi Gilligan (Tom), her brother Charlie McGill (Diane), eleven grandchildren, one great-grandson and an extremely close and loving extended blended family of in-laws, nieces and nephews, who constantly filled her heart with joy.
She is preceded in death by her father Harold J. McGill (“Mac”), her step-father Karl W. Kalassay, and her mother Winifred M. Kalassay (“Grand Winnie”).
A Memorial Service will take place at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Issue, MD 20664 on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 11:30am. A link to the recorded service will be posted immediately after. Inurnment is planned at West Point NY in late Summer. Details will be published later.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Carol’s name to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the charity of your choice.
