I miss my friend. I didn't know Donna had passed away until today.

She was the strongest woman I know. 
I met her when we were both working for the Army Operations Center in the Pentagon in early 2000s. She was a Lieutenant Colonel and I was a Major. She was one of the smartest officers I knew. 

We continued our friendship for years after.  I attended her promotion to Colonel and she attended my promotion to Colonel in 2011 (a few years after her's). The last time I saw her was in May or April of 2021. I was working as a contractor in Chrystal City. She came to have dinner with me because I had decided to retire. We were celebrating that.
We would talk that year and she would tell me of her course work.  I believe she was studying theology (see... smart!!). She had moved to North Carolina to continue that work. She said she loved it there.

Ironically, I texted her on 7 Mar 2022 to tell her of the passing of my beloved dog.  I wish I could have been with her instead.
I will miss her forever.

Rest in Peace Donna. The world is a bit lonely now.

To Donna‘s family, I extend my most heartfelt sympathy for your loss.   I hope your memories and your faith will sustain you during this time of grieving.

Donna and I met through our involvement with the Smithsonian and discovered we had many common interests and experiences.   We  formed a group of supporters of the National Museum of African-American History and Culture as it was being developed.  Both of us were alumni of UNC Chapel Hill for graduate school/law school.   

Donna was passionate about social justice. Despite her illness, Donna was forward-looking and fearless.   She was pursuing a degree in theology at Duke University to broaden her approach to the changes our society so urgently needs to make.     

Donna will forever be a part of the many lives she touched.   

Donna was a much beloved friend and donor to the Smithsonian.  Her enthusiasm for our programs and mission were boundless; she was wonderful to be with at an event because of her endless curiosity and excitement at being with us after hours in our museums.  She was proud of her father's earlier connection in his professional life working at the Smithsonian, and sought to honor him with her gifts.  We will miss her, and send our deepest condolences to her family.

Words cannot express the sadness I feel about the death of Donna. She will be greatly missed; and, will forever be in our hearts. I know that nothing I say can mend your heartache.  However, I will keep you in my prayers.   Please accept my condolences over your loss. I pray that the Lord gives you the strength to persevere; that He will give you peace; and, that His tender touch will bring you comfort.

Donna, there are a lot of things I will miss about you. You were always ready for a road-trip, you were a wonderful aunt to my children, and you made the only carrot cake I would eat. But most of all I will miss that infectious smile.

May we remember the gift of my special friend, Donna, and "birthday buddy",  as we referenced one another, since we shared the same birthdate together.  She demonstrated the gift of a lively, caring, kind, and loving spirit of Christ in many ways!  Thankful that we had an opportunity to experience her presence amongst us as she passed our way! Donna was an incredible goal-oriented person. She set goals for herself until the very end. I will miss our long telephone calls that we use to call "strategy sessions." She would tell me her next moves; I would listen; then she would ask "what do you think Barb?" I would express my pros and cons, but mostly provide encouraging words to support her confidence. 
Donna you are missed. Love you much!

Donna was an amazing and dedicated friend.  I will truly miss her phone calls, seeing her praise God in the ASBC choir, and hearing about her travel adventures.  May God keep you in peace, my friend!
