

Douglas F. McCollum, age 84, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away on July 31st, 2022, surrounded by three generations of his family. Doug was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey and was the oldest son of Douglas and Pauline (Bannick) McCollum. He was a graduate of John Swett High School, Crockett, California (1956) and San Francisco University (1966). He served his country his entire career, beginning with a tour in the U.S. Army as a Military Police officer, and as an officer in the Walnut Creek (California) Police Department, which led to positions in Southeast Asia with the U.S. State Department as a Public Safety Officer. His service also included the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Investigative Services Division before he retired from the U.S. Department of Labor (1984) and continued to serve as a consultant for the government for many years in the U.S. State Department Office of Diplomatic Security. Doug excelled early in athletics as a Junior Olympic gold medalist diver in the 10m platform, high school football as a defensive back, enjoyed teaching judo after he achieved a 6th degree belt, mastering chess strategies, home improvements and beating family and friends at the occasional weekend poker game. He was an active member of St Louis Catholic Parish and a Eucharist Minister and remembered for his humor.
He is survived by his wife, Marita McCollum and younger brother, Thomas McCollum; daughters Vanessa Spear (Paul), Diana Crosby (Jonathan); sons Douglas (Suzanne), and Patrick (Lauren). He was preceded in death by his sister, Carole Carr.
