I'm in shock as I'm sure everyone else is. Doug was such a good friend to me. I was single with kids and he even attended one of their birthday parties at Chucky Cheese. I've never been with Dougie without having a great, hysterical time. His uniforms, Christmas cards and just being himself gave many joy. My prayers for the love of his life, (he told me many times) and the rest of his family and friends. RIP my dear friend.

Doug worked with me for many years. Almost every morning he would stop into my office and discuss something.  I  missed him a lot when he retired, and I miss him even more now.  I am deeply sorry that I will be out of town and unable to attend the celebration of Doug's life in person, but my thoughts will be with you.

My wife and I were very sad to hear of Doug's passing. Doug was a wonderful person and a good friend.  His happy and joyful demeanor was contagious.  He was always very enthusiastic and passionate about his work to provide computer access to people with disabilities.  Doug opened my eyes to this need and inspired myself and others to develop creative ways to meet the needs of the disabled people in the information technology environment.

Doug talked with me about pipe smoking and pipe restoration.  He gifted to me several of his fathers' old pipes.  I have refurbished and restored several of them. In the future those pipes will bring back the memory of a great, friendly, smiling, and generous fellow who always thought about others first.

Two small corrections to my Guestbook entry yesterday for Doug Meick:  1. I believe the Steeplechase races were called the 'Gold Cup', not 'America's Cup'.   2. The Assistive Technology Demo Lab at the LOC that both Doug and I worked in was called the 'Assistive Technology Demonstration Center'.  My mistakes; Doug would have caught both immediately !  Again, I am greatly sorry to hear of his death.

    I worked for 31 years in the same overall department at the Library of Congress as Doug did. During my last few (5?, probably far more) years there we both (along with Fred Pickering) spent many of our work hours concentrating on running the LOC's Technology Assessment Group's Assistive Technology Demonstration Lab. Not only did we share numerous hours doing this; but we both went through the process of planning out our respective retirements during our final year there. While I retired in May 2011 (41 years service), Doug worked on another 6 months before his November 2011 retirement.  During those final years we talked many times about many different things: be they work related issues, the America's Cup steeplechase races, to his once falling off a Polo Pony, to even his traveling once to England with Tareq and others who shared his love for the Sport of Polo.I am now very sad to suddenly learn of his death, and I know folks will miss him very much...

I'm so sorry to hear of Doug's passing. He enjoyed life so much & he shared it with all his stories of his adventures. Just having returned from a cruise reminds me of his story about returning from Europe on a ship where everyone was sea sick except him & his brother(?).

Donna, Im so sad to hear of Doug leaving us so soon, he was a wonderful man, Miles and I will always have fond memories of him dressed up and driving us on our wedding day in his Rolls Royce . He was always ready with a joke, story, costume and/or some other means to keep us all laughing. I am certain this articulate, charming, and always so delightful gentleman will be missed by many.

There are few pople that cross your path in life that truly leave you a better person.  Doug was one of those people.  His kind soul was a blessing to all who knew him.  He was so full of life that you wanted to be around him because you knew you would be laughing within minutes.
