IN THE CARE OF
Demaine Funeral Home
Elsie Mason lived a long, productive life. After achieving the milestone of recently turning 103 years of age, she passed away quietly from this world on August 10th. A strong woman of Christian faith, we are confident Elsie received the promise of entering into eternal rest.
Born in Washington, D.C. to the late Aaron Wallace Stevens and Ethel Virginia (Gerns) Stevens, Elsie was the sister to one sibling, her younger brother, Earl. A resident of Arlington, Virginia for most of her life, after completing 9th grade, her formal schooling ceased. Though she sometimes described herself as dumb, she was smart, stubborn and disciplined. Thrifty to the point of frugal, Elsie was an avid investor. She followed the stock market closely.
In her late teens, she met Clyde Eugene Mason Jr. The couple married, August 4, 1937. Their union produced one son, the late Stephen Eugene Mason. By 1950, the couple had separated. Elsie and her young son returned to live in her parents’ home. She worked as a sales clerk at a local department store briefly before becoming a telephone operator for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company, known as C&P Telephone. She worked at C&P for over 30 years, before retiring. Afraid to drive, Elsie took the bus everywhere.
Though she could be a stern disciplinarian, Elsie had a cheeky sense of humor. Her house was immaculate. Her surroundings ordered her world. She loved animals and was a keen observer of the nature. After every meal, she would collect the food scraps and toss them outside for the birds and squirrels.
A member of First Christian Church of Alexandria, Elsie would get on her knees daily and pray for each member of her family by name. She never missed this time of intercession. The Lord blessed Elsie with good health. It was only in the last year her independence was eclipsed. Yet, the Lord used the narrowing of her world to bless us, her grandchildren, by providing an opportunity for us to draw near to her and to one another.
Elise Virginia Mason is survived by three granddaughters, two grandsons, and a host of great grandchildren, cousins and other relatives. A funeral service for Elsie will be held Monday, August 22, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria, VA 22314. Following the funeral service will be a graveside service at Mount Comfort Cemetery, 6600 South Kings Highway, Alexandria, VA 22306.
