May 9, 1943-September 21, 2014
The daughter of the late Dorothy Dollard Carey and James J. Carey, Sr., Hope was born in Troy, New York, where she attended Knickerbocker Junior High School and Lansingburgh High School. She received a Bachelor of Science in Music Education and a Master of Science in Music Education from the Crane School of Music, State University of New York at Potsdam, where she was a member of the Agonian sorority.
Hope taught general music for many years at St. Mary’s School, Alexandria, VA, involving all students in several musical productions, concerts and Christmas pageants. She also taught music at Grace Episcopal Day School in Alexandria, and at Abingdon Elementary School, Barrett Elementary School and Yorktown High School in Arlington, Liverpool High School in Liverpool, New York, and Hoosic Valley High School in Schaghticoke, New York. She also taught piano at her home to children and adults.
She leaves her husband of 44 years, Henry A. Nejako, Jr., and two sons, Isaac Carey Nejako of the home and H. Alexander Nejako (Stephanie DeLeon) of Indianapolis, Indiana, as well as two granddaughters, Emily Victoria Nejako and Lulu Miriam Nejako, of Indianapolis. She also leaves two brothers, J. Dollard Carey (Elizabeth) of River Forest, Illinois and James J. Carey, Jr., (Nancy) of Lake Forest, Illinois, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Hope lived at times in the Syracuse and Troy, New York areas, as well as in Arlington and Alexandria Virginia and Walnut Creek, California. Wherever she was, she made friends of everyone she met in her neighborhood, stores, medical offices and schools. She actively supported the West Potomac High School Parents, Teachers and Students Association and, on its behalf, found clever but inexpensive gifts for every teacher to mark holidays and teacher appreciation days. While at St. Mary’s School, she supported fundraising for a new piano and risers for choral performances.
