Departed this life at the age of 86 on November 16, 2010. Beloved husband of Kiki, father of Jeffrey, Steven, and Sally-Ann, grandfather of Jason, Keri (dec.), Kara, Brittany, Steven, Jonathan, and Camille, and great-grandfather to Bailee Grace. Sandy was predeceased by, and survived by, countless friends and relatives who knew him as a devoted family man, a distinguished veteran of three wars and a man of unlimited compassion, optimism and good humor. Born in Brockton, Massachussets he attended Michigan State where he played football until his enlistment in the U.S. Marines during WWII. He earned a degree in history at Upsala College and a Master's Degree in international relations from Boston University. He devoted his life in service to his country, serving a full career first in the U.S. Marines and later the U.S. Army. His combat service included action in the Pacific in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam and is highlighted by the award of two Silver Stars and multiple Distinguished Flying Crosses. Following his distinguished military career he was employed for many years by FMC Corporation. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fisher House Foundation Inc, www.fisherhouse.org. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington Street, Alexandria, VA. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
