I've been full of a sense of loss for the past two weeks. As someone raised by educators, I was reluctant to have anything to do with teaching. Yet, after I took the plunge in my late twenties, Aunty Ran was a bit part of inspiring me to do what I've done for the past quarter century. We exchanged countless letters in which talked about favorite classes, lesson ideas, anecdotes about students. I'll miss her terribly. Helen Randolph Ran Hobart died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday February 28th at the age of 87.  After graduation from the University of Michigan, she worked as an elementary school teacher in the Fairfax County School System.  She volunteered at the Kennedy Center and the Arena Stage and enjoyed foreign travel and was a long-time member of the P.E.O. She is pre-deceased by her sister Emily Hobart Dahlgren, and her brothers Robert and T. Duncan Hobart III, and is survived by her nephews Robert, David, and T. Duncan Hobart IV, Stephen and Robert Dahlgren, and their families.  A memorial service is scheduled for 3pm Sunday March 15th at Demaine's funeral home in Alexandria.  In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to the P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education.
