I am one of the 3/5 Cav officers who lives in VA. I am contemplating attending the funeral to represent the Association. I served in the Squadron after the General had left. Arlington Cemetery has restrictions on attendance. I am not sure there would be room for me. Col Howard F Bachman


BG retired Army Hugh Bartley was my SQD commander in Vietnam in 1968; he supported my Trp A commander that  recommeded for my Medal of Honor staffing (1LT Vietnam  Ronald L White recommendation); paperwork that got lost in dead files in 2020. 

Great man that was an excellent commander under combat situations.

It was an honor being BG Bartley's case manager and assisting him with his care. He will always be remembered. 

I was Hugh's Executive Officer during his entire command tour with the 3rd Squadron, 5th Cavalry in Vietnam.  Later, after we both had left military service, it was at his invitation that I joined the Architectural Engineering firm in Chicago, where he had become the Vice President for Plans and Programs.  For some years I worked with him as the Vice President for Human Resources and Services and as a fellow member of the Executive Committee.  In Vietnam, he became my role model for combat leadership; in Chicago, he became my role model for managerial excellence.  Through all the year from Vietnam through Germany and the Pentagon and on to get togethers in Virginia, he was my friend.  The breadth of his interests were amazing, as was his wry humor.  He will be missed, but not forgotten.  We will not see his like again.

Deepest condolences from the Vietnam Veterans of the Black Knights, the association of Vietnam veterans of the 3rd Squadron, 5th Cavalry. Then LTC Bartley served as Squadron Commander in Vietnam in 1968 and was a dedicated member of our Black Knights. We salute his service and his inspiring presence among us. May he rest in peace.
