Jeffrey Peter Francis Petrino, died peacefully on July 15, 2021 at his Alexandria, VA home. He suffered from complications related to Alzheimer’s Disease.
Born in Trenton, New Jersey, he was the eldest child of Peter Francis and Geraldine Catherine (Lamsbach) Petrino. Educated in Catholic elementary schools in Pennsylvania, he graduated from Holy Ghost Preparatory School in Bensalem, PA. Jeffrey earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1970 at The Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA. After graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Army National Guard of New Jersey and then began his career and further studies in Federal acquisitions working with the procurement office at Fort Dix, NJ.
His marriage to Mary Ann DiCorpo took place in 1973 at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Middlebury, CT. After moving to Alexandria in 1974, he continued acquisitions work at the Pentagon with Defense Supply Service - Washington. Through the late 1970s and 1980s, he worked on Outer Continental Shelf research with the U. S. Department of the Interior, Minerals Management Service. In New York, NY, Washington, DC, and several National Laboratory sites, he collaborated with noted scientific researchers on numerous studies. In 1991, he took a position as a Contracting Officer for the Internal Revenue Service, where he was responsible for large computer procurements.
Jeffrey concluded his Federal career at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, where he facilitated contracts for ongoing facilities improvements, including the completion of the Sculpture Gallery. In 2006, he retired from Federal service after more than thirty-seven years. He provided acquisitions support services with private firms until 2017, when he retired from all professional endeavors.
As a dedicated member of both Saint Rita of Cascia Catholic Church and the Basilica of Saint Mary in Alexandria, Jeffrey worked on the 1995 Parish Bicentennial Census for the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the Basilica. For many years, he organized and led the monthly First Friday devotions of the Nocturnal Adoration Society, an Archconfraternity of lay faithful, for which he served as President of the Deanery II Chapter for the Diocese of Arlington. Because of his dominant Irish patrimony, he became a member of the Ancient Order of Hiberians, Herbert-Cady Division, as well as the Legion of Mary, the Society of the Patricians, and the Serra Club of Arlington.
In May 2013, Jeffrey was installed as a Fourth-Degree Knight of the Fitzgerald Council No. 459, and the Potomac Assembly No. 2204 of Alexandria. In the Council, he served in numerous positions, including Chancellor and member of the Color Corps.
Jeffrey is survived by his wife, Mary, with whom he had one beloved daughter, Julia Kenney Teresa Petrino (1984 - 1999) who died from complications of Hodgkins Lymphoma. He was also pre-deceased by his parents and by his younger brother Michael Kenney Petrino. Immediate survivors include his sisters Marianne Petrino-Sheehan of Trenton and Helene Zaluski of Little Egg Harbor, NJ; his brother Philip Gerald Petrino, ASID of Hellertown, PA; two nephews, one niece, many cousins, colleagues, and countless friends in Alexandria, where he resided for forty-seven years.
The family will receive visitors at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 South Washington Street, Alexandria, Virginia on Friday evening, July 23 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
A Solemn Requiem Mass in the Extraordinary Form (1962 Missal) will be offered on Saturday, July 24 at 11:00 am at the Basilica of Saint Mary, 310 South Royal Street, Alexandria, Virginia.
Individuals attending a Solemn Requiem Mass in the Extraordinary Form shall present themselves in traditional funeral attire: modest dark dresses or skirt suits for the women; dark suits or menswear separates for the men. Casual, exercise, or sportswear attire is inappropriate for attendance at Holy Mass.
Practicing Catholics who are appropriately disposed through prior sacramental confession may present themselves for Holy Communion, which will be distributed in accordance with the 1962 Ritual to those who kneel at the Altar Rail and receive on the tongue. There is no provision in the 1962 Ritual for reception of Holy Communion in the hand or while standing at the Altar Rail.
Private interment for the family and invited guests will follow the Mass in the Basilica Cemetery of Saint Mary, 1000 South Washington, Alexandria, VA. The funeral procession will use the South Royal Street Gate to the Cemetery. Invited guests may use the off-street parking in the Basilica School parking lot, where there will be another access gate directly into the Cemetery.
Votive Masses for the blessed repose of deceased members of the Petrino family would be deeply appreciated. Memorials may be made as charitable contributions to the Basilica of Saint Mary or to the Knights of Columbus, Colonel Fitzgerald Council 459 and sent to 313 Duke Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314.
