

Joanne Steck Metcalf of Alexandriapassed away on June 11, 2015.
A native of Spotsylvania County, Joannewas the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Steck. She was a graduate ofSpotsylvania High School and Longwood College, and was a teacher in theFredericksburg Public Schools in the 1950s and 1960s. She received her MastersDegree from George Mason University and was later employed in theAlexandria office of the Virginia Department of Vocational Rehabilitationuntil her retirement. She was an active member of Christ Church Episcopalin Alexandria.
She was preceded in death by her firsthusband, James Edwards of Boykins, Virginia, and her second husband, Lt Colonel Curtis "Rusty" MetcalfUSAF with whom she will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery.
She is survived by her step-daughters, MikealeineMill, Sabre Metcalf, Curtine Metcalf and Jodie Metcalf, and her granddaughterVanessa Cook.
She is also survived by her brother andsister-in-law, David M. and Frances G. Steck of Columbia, South Carolina, andby two nieces and five nephews: MichaelSteck, Richard Steck, Stephen Steck, John M. Steck IV, Martha Wingfield, Robert Steck, and MaryCrane. She is also survived by her caring friend and neighbor, April Wilhelm.
Joanne had an adventurous spirit, avibrant personality, and a generous heart. She pursued many activitiesthroughout her life, including travel, gardening, and choral singing. Playing her piano was a special joy and sheenjoyed acting in productions of the Alexandria Little Theater. She madefriends wherever she went and kept them for life.
In closing we must mention the trueloves of her life, her dogs : all the Irish Terriers but especially Katie, dearAngus the Westie, and her last one, Charlie.
There will be a visitation onFriday, June 26, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00pm at the Demaine Funeral Home, 520 South Washington St., Alexandria, Virginia. The funeral will be held on Saturday, June 27, at 11:00 AM at ChristChurch, 118 North Washington Street, Alexandria, Virginia.
