
JENKINS JOHN S. JENKINS REAR ADMIRAL, JUDGE ADVOCATE GENERAL'S CORPS, U.S. NAVY (RETIRED) SENIOR ASSOCIATE DEAN EMERITUS OF LAW GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL Rear Admiral John S. Jenkins of Alexandria, Virginia passed away on April 23, 2015 at the Woodbine Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 until his retirement in 1982. Immediately before his retirement he was serving as Rear Admiral, Judge Advocate General's Corps, in the position of Judge Advocate General of the Navy and Commander, Naval Legal Service Command. Other assignments included duty as Deputy Judge Advocate General, Assistant Judge Advocate General (Civil Law), and as Special Counsel to the Secretary of the Navy. He was also a member of the faculty of the Naval Justice School, Newport, Rhode Island, and he served in various other assignments during his Navy career. He has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (gold star in lieu of a second award), and the Meritorious Service Medal. He joined the staff of the George Washington University Law School in November of 1982. He served as Assistant Dean for Career Development until he was appointed Associate Dean for External Affairs in March of 1986. In July of 1988, Dean Jenkins was appointed Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs. On July 1, 2000, he was appointed Senior Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs, and he retired from the Law School in the spring of 2001 and was designated as Senior Associate Dean Emeritus of Law. Dean Jenkins served as Professorial Lecturer in Law and taught the required course in Professional Responsibility and Ethics. At the time of his retirement he was awarded the President's Medal - the highest honor that the President can confer - by the University President. He has also received the Jacob Burns Award for Extraordinary Service to the Law School from the George Washington University Law Alumni Association. He received his A.B. degree with Honors in History from Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania, in June of 1954. He was awarded the J.D. degree with Honors from the George Washington University Law School in 1961. While at the George Washington University Law School, he was a member of the Editorial Staff of the George Washington University Law Review. He also holds an M.A. degree awarded in 1966 by American University, Washington, DC. He was a member of the bars of the Supreme Court of the United States, the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. Also, he was a member of the Virginia State Bar, the American Bar Association (Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation), the Federal Bar Association, the Judge Advocates Association and the Federalist Society. He served for 18 years as a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association as the delegate from the Judge Advocates Association. He was a past chairman of the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on Lawyers in the Armed Forces and has been a member of the Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services and was that Committee's representative on the Ethics 2000 Advisory Council. He also served as the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Legal Assistance for Military Personnel. He was a director of the National Institute of Military Justice and served for seven years as a director of the Navy Memorial Foundation. He was a long time member of the Army and Navy Club, Washington, D.C. and served for a number of years on the Board of Governors of the Club. He has been awarded The Judicial Award for Public Service by the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces and the Robinson O. Everett Life Service Award by the Judge Advocates Association. This is the highest honor which the Judge Advocates Association bestows, and it recognizes contributions to the enhancement of military law and the military justice system. He was the son of the late Walter H. and Mildred L. Jenkins of West Pittston, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Lewis Jenkins in Alexandria, Virginia where they have lived for the past forty-six years. They have one son, John S. Jenkins, Jr., who is the General Counsel of TE Connectivity, Ltd., living in Princeton, New Jersey, with wife and daughter-in-law, Karen, and two granddaughters, Kelly and Katie. Funeral services will be held at Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2015. In lieu of flowers, the Jenkins family requests that memorial gifts be directed to the John S. Jenkins Scholarship care of the George Washington University Law School, 2000 H. Street, N.W., Washington D.C. 20052. Funeral services will be held at Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2015.
