LTC John Austin Mullett, USA, Retired, 84, of The Fairfax at Belvoir Woods in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, passed away on January 12th, 2021. He was born in Bloomington Indiana on January 7th, 1937. He graduated from P.K. Yonge high school in Gainesville, Florida class of 1955. John then attended the University of Florida and earned a B.S. degree in Journalism in 1960. He was married to Nancy Ferguson Mullett in 1962 and was happily married for 56 years until her passing in August of 2018.
After college John was commissioned in the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant (2LT) in September of 1960 and honorably retired from the Army in September of 1980. Then Captain John Mullett served two tours in Vietnam earning the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone and then being promoted to Major. He also earned two Army Commendation Medals for distinctive meritorious achievement and service. After retiring from the Army, John worked for defense contract companies FMC, United Defense and BAE Systems until 2007 before final retirement.
John Mullett was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and dearly loved his family. He was also particularly fond of his last two cats, Mew and Phoebe. Our family has lost its leader, a great man who loved and supported us all whenever he was needed. He was a devout Christian and attended, ushered, and counted weekly donations for St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria Virginia. John also had a great love for the game of golf and regularly played at the Belle Haven Country Club where he was a long-time member.
John Mullett is survived by his two sons and their wives, Brad and Laurie Mullett and Mark and Betsy Mullett. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Stephanie Mullett and Jonathan Mullett. Funeral arrangements and the service will be held at Demaine Funeral Home in Alexandria, Virginia by invitation only, due to COVID-19. The service will be available to all others virtually via a link to be provided. The service will be held on Thursday January 28th and the burial will immediately follow the service at Mount Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria, Virginia. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider donating to the Wounded Warrior Project, the Feline Foundation of Greater Washington, or the charity of your choice.
