Passed away peacefully on June 22, 2012. He grew up in Dallas, TX and graduated from SMU with honors in 1943. After graduation, John was hired immediately by the Naval Research Lab and also served in the US Naval Reserve from 1943-1953. John's greatest achievement during his 40+ years at NRL was designing a pulse 2TW generator, Gamble II, used to simulate the effects of nuclear weapons. His innovation was one of 75 honored at NRL's 75th anniversary in 1998. John was predeceased by his beloved wife Katie Shipman and daughter Linda Cunningham. John is survived by his son, John D. Shipman III and his wife Mary Stripinis; daughters Mary C. Shipman and Susan (Cary) Leeth; five grandchildren: LCDR Mary (Jonathan) Bonar, Thomas Cunningham Jr., Jennifer Leeth, John D. Shipman IV and Joshua Shipman; three great-grandchildren: Ambrielle and Jaden Wood, and Isabel Bonar. Service and Interment private.
